{"id":180,"date":"2024-08-05T19:54:52","date_gmt":"2024-08-05T19:54:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/elma.lgbt\/?p=180"},"modified":"2024-08-05T19:54:55","modified_gmt":"2024-08-05T19:54:55","slug":"europes-lgbtqia-media-publications-join-forces","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/elma.lgbt\/index.php\/2024\/08\/05\/europes-lgbtqia-media-publications-join-forces\/","title":{"rendered":"Europe\u2019s LGBTQIA+ media publications join forces"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the worrying outlook for LGBTQIA+ people in Ukraine, Europe\u2019s LGBTQIA+ media publications are joining forces to work together to amplify the stories of our community and to tackle homophobia in all its forms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;LGBTQIA+ people across Europe continue to encounter day-to-day discrimination and abuse:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>61% of LGBTI people avoid holding hands in public.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>37% of LGBTI people feel that they are being discriminated against.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>11% of LGBTI people have been assaulted physically or sexually in the last 5 years. This rises for Trans people and Intersex people. Only 1 in 5 of these incidents has been officially reported.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These results show that there has been only limited progress on these issues since 2012.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Source: EU LGBTI 2 Survey, FRA (2019)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ten of Europe\u2019s leading LGBTQIA+ media publications have joined forces to amplify the concerns and visibility of our community and to tackle the underlying issues. ELMA is the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/elma.lgbt\/\">European LGBTIA+ Media Association<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are all living in uncertain times, but it\u2019s clear that Europe\u2019s LGBTQIA+ community is particularly vulnerable to health inequality, economic hardship, and the worrying rise in homophobia, biphobia and transphobia\u2026\u201d explained Giannis Papagiannopoulos. \u201cELMA gives us a clear statement of intent that Europe\u2019s LGBTQIA+ community demands to be heard and is united against homophobia, transphobia and biphobia in all its forms.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Papagiannopoulos is the co-founder of Antivirus \u2013 the only LGBTQIA+ publication in Greece. He\u2019s also the president of the newly formed European LGBTQIA+ Media Association \u2013 ELMA. He\u2019s committed to strengthening the diversity of ELMA\u2019s membership to fully reflect Europe\u2019s LGBTQIA+ community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The founding members of ELMA are already collaborating on a range of journalistic projects \u2013 amplifying the stories of Europe\u2019s LGBTQIA people and sharing those stories with media outlets around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne of our first actions is to demonstrate the economic and political power of our European LGBTQIA+ community\u2026\u201d added Papagiannopoulos. \u201cWe\u2019re leveraging the audience reach of the publications within ELMA to undertake a major survey of LGBTQIA+ people. This is an ongoing process \u2013 giving everyone a voice and enabling us to focus on and elevate the things that really matter to LGBTQIA+ people in Europe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ELMA\u2019s survey of LGBTQIA+ people is being conducted in partnership with Visit.Brussels and VO Citizen.
